Christmas in Lithuania: New Year’s Eve and Day
Between the years 1940 and 1991 the Russian-dominated U.S.S.R (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) occupied Lithuania. Religious holidays were forbidden during these years and some Christmas customs transferred to New Year’s Day, a secular holiday. For example, the government renamed Christmas trees "New Year’s trees” and promoted a New Year’s gift bringer, Grandfather Frost (see also Christmas in Russia).
